You scanned my rug. I'm 14 Hilos de Lana, my workshop here in Teotitlán del Valle. The name isn't random: 14 for the day I was born, Hilos (threads) for my name, Lana (wool) for the material I work with.

I'm the fourth generation: from my great-grandfather to my grandfather José, from José to my father Miguel, and from Miguel to me. I follow my ancestors' root designs, but I also take risks, weaving not just wool, but cotton, silk, leather, suede, and ixtle, materials few dare to master.

Shearing and wool washing

My sheep are raised in the highlands, where the climate favors their development and yields more abundant fiber. I wash the wool with natural soaps, amole (a wild root that grows in the mountains of the Sierra Juárez), to remove lanolin and fleece impurities, and as a repellent to keep the wool from getting moth-eaten.

02

Cardado

Carding

I comb the wool with two large wooden brushes with metal teeth, the "carders." This is where my inspiration begins: no two sheep give the same tone, so as the wool comes out I'm already deciding which colors to dye, and from there, the design of my next rug takes shape.

03

Hilado en rueca

Spinning on the wheel

Carded wool is spun on the wheel to create uniform threads. The tighter the twist, the less likely threads will unravel on the loom. Thread tension is an art in itself, threads too thick or thin ruin the final weave.

04

Teñido

Dyeing

I submerge the yarn skeins in boiling water with natural dye and mordant (alum, lemon juice, or salt depending on the dye). Cooking time, temperature, and proportion determine color intensity. This stage alone can take me from one day to a week.

05

Montaje del telar y urdimbre

Loom setup and warping

I set up the warp threads (fixed vertical threads) on the pedal loom. This step defines the final width and length of the rug. I use cotton for the warp, more durable, while the weft that creates the design is dyed wool.

06

Tejido

Weaving

I operate the pedals with my feet to alternately raise warp threads, while passing the shuttle with weft thread hand to hand. It requires total coordination between feet, hands, and mind, the complex design lives only in my memory, not in a written pattern.

07

Acabado

Finishing

Once weaving is complete, I trim the excess threads, tie the fringes, and wash the rug once more to set colors and soften the wool. A well-finished rug has no visible loose threads on the back, checking the back is the first quality test.

Every day I start with that in mind: if I have a rug already on the loom, I continue it; if it's a new design, it's total concentration, no distractions. That's why no two of my rugs are ever the same, not even if you ask for the same design again. My natural dyes and wool are never identical from one sheep to the next, so the color never comes out exactly the same for me either.

When I'm carding the wool, the tone it gives me already tells me which colors will work, and from there, the design of the next rug is born. Hilario, 14 Hilos de LanaHilario, 14 Hilos de Lana
